What is your favorite part or your job?

Truly making a difference in the lives of our local children and families.

What was the inspiration behind the business?

Our founder, Karin Lyman, grew up in Cincinnati then spent two decades traveling around the world as a military spouse. She visited the world’s most famous landmarks and museums, took in the local cultures, and was amazed by the multilingual abilities and cultural awareness of the fascinating people she encountered.

While living in Italy, Karin worked in a small Montessori school for a few years. It was there that she decided she would open a Montessori-inspired school when she returned home to Cincinnati – where she could use her own experiences to develop an interest in art, music, languages, travel and learning in young children.

In 1995, the first location of The Children’s House opened, bringing an innovative and exciting approach to the education of young children that blended the best of Montessori and traditional methods, with an added touch of excitement and fun. This combination proved to be exceptional.

Today, The Children’s House consists of six locations in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, and over 10,000 children have begun their educational journeys ignited with a passion for learning that will stay with them for life. Next year we will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the school!

What are the three most important things about your business?

  • At our Montgomery location, we offer childcare for infants (6 weeks old) through preschool (5 years old), before/after-school care and summer camp.  We also have full and part-time options.
  • We use the best of both Montessori and traditional teaching methodologies. Our unique curriculum adheres to Ohio’s Learning Standards, created by the Ohio Department of Education, and is guided by the Montessori approach to education. It incorporates thematic learning experiences and interactive literacy that strengthen intellectual, social and physical skills. Special to our program is children rotate classrooms for different subjects throughout the day, and classroom materials are always changing. We rotate themes six times a year per subject, keeping learning exciting.
  • We Clean Green! The Children’s House incorporates Green Cleaning Best Practices with a focus on process and products.  Daily cleaning with EPA Registered Sanitizes made from 100% non-toxic and biodegradable ingredients, and weekly disinfection using cutting-edge Electro-Static sprayers to target pathogens wherever they hide are just a couple of the steps we’re taking to maintain a healthy and safe environment for your children.

If you could explain your business in the simplest way, how would you?

The Best Daycare and Preschool in Cincinnati.

What is one of your favorite days at school each year?

We do so many fun events at The Children’s House, it’s too hard to pick just one. One of the favorites is our Flying Piglet Mini-thon which takes place the Friday before the big race every year. Students run a mile (in laps) while their classmates, teachers and family cheer them on. They practice during gym class in the weeks before the race, and in art, create banners and posters to hold along the route.

A couple other favorites are our yearly Prom and a newer event, our CSO Day, where we bring in members of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for a performance and music lab. We were the first daycare/preschool in the greater Cincinnati region to bring in the CSO’s Musicians in Schools program, and we are very proud of that.

What makes The Children’s House standout for child care?

Our expert and highly trained child care professionals, our exceptional curriculum and unique rotation program, our bright and beautiful classrooms and our green cleaning practices.

Do you have any hobbies or activities of interest? What are they?

Our family loves attending local events and festivals, seeing theater and live music, and enjoying the outdoors hiking and golfing.

What is one of your favorite quotes?

“Help me do it myself” by Maria Montessori – the foundation of the Montessori education.
