What is your favorite part of your job?

The guests! Every person has a story and every group has its own feel. It couldn’t be more fun to meet everyone, regardless if they stop by for a quick bite or in search of a bottle for a special occasion.

What was the inspiration behind the business?

Community.  The mission of the organization to bring people together resonated deeply.  Wine and food are certainly better together, but it is people that make a place feel like home.  We moved to Cincinnati from Boston a few years ago. Our friends and neighbors here quickly made Cincinnati a home.

Do you or your business donate to any charities? Which ones? Why?

We love to support the local organizations – schools, neighborhood clubs and non-profits in the area. They are the lifeblood of a community.  Robin co-leads a national non-profit serving a handful of cities in the US, and has been doing social impact work for decades.

What are the three most important things about your business?

  • Comfort.  The word “place” in the name of the business is quite purposeful.  It’s first and foremost a place to go to and spend time at.  We think of Z Place for Wine as a neighbor’s house, where one can stop in comfortably to pick something up or simply say hello.  And when an occasion calls for it, it’s a place for a gathering that each group can make their own, with their own tone, and feel, and experience.
  • People.  We are a very small team but with a shared passion for taking care of guests and enjoying good wine and food.  Our goal is to delight and make every visit not just productive but comfortable and fun.
  • Wine and food.  Bob, the GM of the store, likes to quip that he sacrifices his body for the sake of guests by tasting the myriad wines before they end up on the shelf.  Tom, our cheese master and chef, takes equal care and pride with cheeses and other foods.  (he makes soup with incredible intensity to get it just right – and right it is!)

If you could explain your business in the most simple way, how would you?

We help people enjoy wine, food and each other.

What is your key to success?

We strive to be a good neighbor and a great partner for each customer.  There’s nothing we won’t attempt to help our guests.

Name one short term goal.

Put kids to bed every night when not traveling.

What is your favorite place to eat in Montgomery?

Forno. Thank you, Chef Cristian!

Do you have any hobbies or activities of interest? What are they?

We are fortunate to parlay personal passion for wine and cheese into this little business.  Otherwise our lovely kids, 5 and 3 years old, are our favorite way to spend free time.  Both Robin and Kes love to travel and read, including about wine. Robin is an amazing cook and photographer. Kes practices Tae Kwon Do as a 3rd degree black belt.

If you could be talented at anything instantly what would you choose?

I would choose ability to heal people. Bringing joy with wine and cheese is a good deal less than a modest start…

"If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right." - Henry Ford
